Assertive Living

What does Assertive Living actually mean? And why should you care? Let me share my answer…

Hey guys, Eric Beck here and I’m so stoked to tell you about our newest class. After decades of teaching people how to overpower their fears, you know what I’ve found??? The real key to it all is what I am now calling “Assertive Living.” Let me explain: it’s a very powerful way to re-engineer the way you deal with life’s problems – at every level: external, internal, at work and at home. It’s the heart and soul of the FAST program but now we’ve reorganized it for everyday life!think Unknown to most of us, each life situation triggers the scripts we’ve unconsciously learned in our past. Like the way a web page works. The user sees the images and text, but it’s the code which loads in a millisecond that determines all the positioning and behaviors. Same with us humans! When conflict shows up (internal or external) our scripts can take over in literally a heart beat. This is actually a type of mental slavery that we must escape if we are to reach our potential.

But some people are able to remain stable, grounded, centered, and secure. How do they get that? What happened to their scripts??? Are they just lucky? OK enough typing, let me just tell you…

The ABC’s: Awareness

  • Assertive people have learned to control fear, when others allow fear to control them. (It’s NOT about making fear go away)
  • Assertiveness means the ability see a situation clearly and finding an appropriate solution to the situation.
  • It’s about stripping away the veils preconditioned ideas on how we are “supposed” to respond to challenging situations that might get us into trouble.
  • Assertiveness is behaving and communicating verbally and non-verbally in a way that is truthful, kind, and empowering

How is it that we can overwrite the conditioning, the scripts from our past so that we can see what’s really going on – both in our environment and in our heads? We try to memorize good “positive” thoughts, but those just lead us to guilt and anger. What we need is an experience, a specific method that allows us to undo and redo so that our life is the one we want. Let me take a second to explain it…

The Power to Set Boundaries

  • Protecting personal space
  • Projecting assertive demeanor (90% of communication is non verbal)
  • The power of your voice
  • The importance of Breathing
  • Taking Control

Last year the American Institute of Stress reported that businesses lost over $300 billion due to interpersonal conflict. Most was not physical but was of a verbal nature. The most powerful tool we have in effectively dealing with stress and conflict is our ability to use our voice. It can set a boundaries for protection – protecting our body but also protecting our thinking.

By protecting our thinking with appropriate verbal boundary skills, we can actually buy ourselves time to see the “open door” that shows up in every single situation we get into. Often we are blinded by emotion and those darn scripts that fool us into the sucker’s choice: An attitude that says there is no way out. This is the victim’s attitude and it produces disastrous results.

It’s not magic or the “force” but it really works. It gives you the ability to succeed even when it’s not life and death. And, of course, if it is – well you’ve got the upper hand. Let me explain it this way…take a listen:

Core Confidence

  • Accessing your Power within
  • The power of breathing
  • Worth fighting for!
  • The power of Tools
  • You are who you hang out with
  • The importance of Team

Look I know this all sounds so serious but what if we just had some real fun with it? Well exactly! That’s one of the best ways to retool our thinking so that we start seeing success and opportunities instead of what’s missing or other negative traps.
